Junk mail is a big problem for most people. It is especially bad if your internet service provider doesn't stop it on their end. Here is how to do your part, using Apple's Mail program.
Open 'Mail'
Next, choose 'Mail -> Preferences', and then choose 'Junk Mail'
If you haven't already ran through the junk mail training mode, then setup your configuration like the one below.
You need to leave it in your 'Inbox' for awhile - because Mail learns how to deal with what you think is spam, and what isn't - essentially you are training it.
Now, go through your mailboxes and start marking everything you think is junk mail. To do this, select a message(s) and then click the 'Junk Mail' icon, or from the menu, choose 'Message->Mark->As junk mail'. Mail is now 'learning'. As new messages come in, it will try to start marking potential junk - be sure to correct any incorrect junk flags.
After a few weeks, of intense training, then you will be ready to make this happen automatically. Go back to 'Mail->Preferences' and then choose 'Junk Mail'. Now, you can adjust your setting to 'Move it to the Junk mailbox (automatically)' - be sure to leave everything else the same.
Now, be sure to check the new 'Junk' mailbox occasionally -- just in case it flags something as junk, when it really isn't.
