Review: LED Light & Key Lock: Firefly Flashlight for iPhone 4

Every iPhone 4 should have at least one flashlight app, as the LED comes in handy when you need to make your way to the bathroom or find some keys in the dark. If you've looked in the app store, there are tons of Flashlight apps to choose from, but a new one has emerged and asked us to take a look.
As far as flashlight apps go, it's pretty straightforward. You launch the app, press the ON button and the LED on the iPhone 4 brightly lights up, providing you with an abundance of white light to guide you.
This app is a little different in that it offers a 'key lock' to keep you from accidentally turning the light off when you are handling the phone. When you engage the lock, it has a nifty little feature that dims the screen by closing some virtual blinds. To unlock the display, you 'slide to unlock' the key on the front. They call it a 'professional key lock', which I don't really understand why it's named that, but nonetheless, it works.
We're not re-inventing the wheel here, but it's a very nice effort with sharp graphics.

Review: Magellan Roadmate GPS for iPhone

Updated on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 11:01AM by Registered Commenterjcost

A little late to the game, but a welcome addition to the iPhone is the Magellan Roadmate 2010 North America GPS app. Some of the features of the Magellan include spoken street names, highway lane assistance to let you know which lane to be in before a turn comes up, a pedestrian mode for taking it with you while walking, and iPod controls for changing your music without exiting the app, just to name a few.

Easy to Navigate

It's quick and easy to get going. Press MENU, Click ADDRESS, and then enter your specific address.  Then keyboard entry is excellent and quickly predicts what you are trying to enter and provides a selection to choose from.

Once you have done that, you are presented with an overview screen which shows your routing preferences and a large GO button to begin.

Click on it, or you can click on a few of the objects to change various options, such as clicking on the CAR to switch to pedestrian mode.  From this screen you can also choose to view the map or see the turn by turns listed in text, and if you don't like what you see, you can click the Routing Options and it will show you possible variations, such as Fastest Time, Shortest Distance, Most & Least use of highways.  You can even do a trip simulation.

It's pretty straightforward and easy to use.  You can navigate to intersections, contacts from your address book, and over 6 million points of interest.

You can use the map in horizontal or vertical orientation, which ever you prefer. It doesn't add any additional items to the heads up display so you aren't losing anything by choosing one over the other. It still shows the next turns, distance, speed, etc.

POI

The points of interest are done quite well, broken down into categories. If I want to get to a Gas Station, I click POI -> Gas Station and then it presents me with different companies, not just what stations are  close to me; choose Show All, and it shows them in order of proximity.  Since it's category based, if I prefer 'BP' I can choose it and it will show me all of the 'BP' stations close to me.  The same is true for Restaurants and other POIs. It presents you with a list of categories and you can choose from there, instead of simply listing with proximity.

Review: LineUp - Line 'Em Up & Knock 'Em Off - Addictive

A new game that has taken over my iPhone free time is LineUp by Labpixes. I'm addicted to it at the moment.

It's a simple game in theory, knock off three or more squares of the same color to stop the blocks reaching the top. You have 100 clicks to do this and if your score reaches 1000 you'll get 100 more clicks/taps but if you run out of taps before reaching that 1000 score then sorry but game over. That's where thought comes into the game. Rather than just mindless clicking, allowing the color blocks to build up accumulates more points but as the game progresses the blocks also move faster and faster raising the skill level.

Playing Tip;
beware clicking aimlessly at the screen because even if you're not racking up points with each tap you're depleting your tap tally score or not. Also, the diamond shape that appears on the screen, use it wisely and sparingly. Think of it as your 'get out of jail card'. This symbol deletes one row up and across but doesn't add to your score. So if used unwisely could loose you valuable scoring blocks. Remember without three blocks together of the same color you can't knock them off.

Review: Scramble, WordPopper, & WordSearch - Free Word Games for the iPhone

For all you word puzzle fans out there I've put together a small selection of free word games available for the iPhone and iPod Touch that are fun for those of every level.

Scramble

How are you at making sense out of nothing? Well that’s what Scramble is all about. Sixteen letters against the clock. I have to admit at first I couldn’t make head nor tails of this game but once I discovered its quirky way of working I was hooked. Sixteen letters scrambled together and a race against the clock to find as many words as you can in two minutes.  You can set the board up with 25 letters and your clock for three minutes if you wish also.

At the end of the game you’re given a list of all the possible words  you could of found and where they were hidden. Don’t be misled by this list as this is only a guideline. These words can be strange to say the least some not even being of the English language.

You have the ability to save your profile and play online as well as save your score to Facebook to showoff to all your friends what a wordsmith you are.

Review: iGo My Way 2009 - iPhone GPS Navigation

The GPS feature in the iPhone is one of the most exciting features. When you are lost you can pull up Google Maps and figure out where you are. You can use some of the cool 'around me' apps to find POI (points of interest) such as coffee shops, parking, banks, etc. It's really quite wonderful. Due to a licensing issue, you can't use the built-in Google Maps for turn-by-turn, so you have to look at third party solutions.

iGo My way 2009 is one of the latest turn-by-turn offerings available on the App store.

It uses the Navteq maps that offer detailed streets and up to date points of interest. With it's friendly interface and detailed maps, this puts it into a comparable field on par with stand alone GPS units, such as the TomTom or Garmin units.
