iPad - Welcome Apple's new Baby!

Apple introduced their latest revolutionary product today, the iPad. Not iPod, but iPAD. At first glance it looks pretty much like an iPod Touch blown up. Under the hood it pretty much is, but with some new secret sauce.
The new device runs on an Apple developed A4 processor running at 1GHZ, almost twice the speed of the iPod Touch and iPhone 3GS. It features an 9.7" LED backlit multi-touch display with IPS technology. Not the OLED as some thought that it would include, but this is probably the better way to go since the OLED screens aren't great in sunlight and they also are more expensive.  Screen resolution is 1024x768 which is a pretty good resolution to show a whole webpage and still make the text readable.
It features most of the goodies found in the iPhone/iPod , such as the ambient light sensor, accelerometer, non-removable battery (but it gets up to 10hrs), standard Dock connector, etc.
The slick part is the speed and the new and improved stock applications being offered on this device. It comes with the basics, Calendar, iPod, Notepad, etc. They have revamped the Mail app to include a reading pane view which really makes for a more desktop like viewing experience. There is a large software keyboard that looks like it will be easy to type on, but as with the iPhone/iPod Touch, this is subject to the person using it. There are some people out there that REQUIRE a hardware keyboard. Well good news for them, you can use an Apple Bluetooth keyboard with this device, or their combo Dock/Keyboard add-on. That really opens up the possibilities for how people look at this device and how they can use it.
During today's demo, like the iPhone/iPod, it appears that it doesn't run flash. This is a big deal for some people. Flash is everywhere, and Apple's reasoning behind not having flash on the smaller devices was battery life. I wonder now though that it might just be part of their feud with Adobe. I am no fan of Flash, and I think HTML5 is the future, but as it stands, looks like there will be no Flash on the iPad. That means I'm limited to the online video content I can consume. Can you say, "No Hulu!!"?
Accessibility is also important, and Apple isn't leaving the people that need this behind. It features all of the same options that the iPhone & iPod touch have, such as the voice over screen reader & close-captioned content.

Apple Event Speculation

Pure Speculation - I have no inside info, just what I think will happen.

iPhone 4.0 Software - What I think? I think they are at a minimum going to have to be competetive with Google's Android platform.

- Background processes. I really think this is going to have to happen. It just has to.
- Customizable Home Screen.
- Consolidated INBOX for Mail.
- Bing? - I Don't think so. Bing is buying their way into every phone, but I don't think this is going to happen.
- Google Maps w/ Turn by turn - I think this will be an update to the Google Maps app.
- Voice Integration - I think they will expand the voice recognition throughout the phone, perhaps licensing Google's technology.
- Apple opens up the iPhone to more US providers, not just Verizon. They will do this to finish selling out their current stock of iPhone before they announce a new one at the end of June.

Tablet

- The Name - I think the name was the iSlate initially. However, once word got out about all of the 'Slates' introduced by other companies at CES, now we are reading about the 'iPad' patent surfacing again. There is a good chance this will happen.

- 10" OLED screen w/ built-in optional broadband. They will likely use the chipset that supports GSM & CDMA and is provider agnostic. Perhaps when you activate it with a carrier, they offer some sort of rebate for a subsidy.

- New user interface, but looks like OS X.

- $799 w/o subsidy, $499 with.

We will find out Wednesday Jan 27th.

Update: I forgot about the LaLa acquisition. I think this will change iTunes an Apple will introduce it as well. It's time for a change.

Also, if the rumors are true, maybe we will get some TV subscriptions happening. Disney for sure.

Holiday Gift: Mobile Me - Sync the Apple way

Here’s the thing, Mobile me has saved my bacon a few times. It keeps all my sync info, like contacts and iCal, without me thinking about it. It has extra storage for stuff I want to keep in the cloud. It has easy Public Folder access for me to share files with other folks. And it gives me a non ISP e-mail address. You can do all those things with 3+ other programs, but for me this has been the simplest solution. I’ve been lucky that I haven’t had serious issues with it, so I know recommending it is controversial. There have been several times in the last year that I have been glad it’s been there backing me up though. Also don’t pay full price at Apple. Go to Amazon and get it for cheaper.

Product: Mobile Me

Price: $99 from Apple, but cheaper on Amazon.

Apple Event Set for Sept. 9th? Maybe.

All Things D has speculated that Apple's annual 'music' event will take place on September 9, 2009. Seems fitting, if you are into reading the numbers - 9/9/09. Their inside sources say it will essentially be just about the iPods and nothing to do about the talk of the town, the 'tablet'.

Rumors on the web are speculating that the new iPod Touches will have a faster processor & more ram, to make it comparable to the 3GS and even offer a 3MP camera. It's hard to tell what they can do with the shuffle; it will be too easily lost if they go any smaller. Sadly, I personally expect them to retire the hard drive based iPod Classic.

Microsoft will be launching it's new an interesting Zune HD device on September 15th. While it looks quite appealing, and is probably the first competitive offering from Microsoft, it will be lost in the shadow of the new iPod devices.

What do you think?
